Intel Mini Scientist Reflection
News of our participation in the Intel Mini Scientist brought great cheer to the classroom this year. Due to the restrictions, pupils had been unable to participate in collaborative work of this calibre. The project was met with great enthusiasm as it offered the pupils the opportunity to work together in pods.
I believe the children responded positively and enthusiastically to this project because they had the chance to come up with their ideas to form trigger questions; it wasn’t teacher led.
Some groups knew exactly what they wanted to explore, while others needed some steering in a particular direction. One boy did not want to work in a group and felt he would work better independently.
Due to Covid restrictions, the children could not showcase their projects for the school community. This was an aspect that they truly missed as they enjoy imparting knowledge to the younger pupils and demonstrating their findings. However, they enjoyed showcasing their findings for our in-school adjudicator.
This project is extremely worthwhile. It’s always interesting to see how the children work in a group situation. From the outset, some take on the dominant role and like to lead and direct others. Some may be more interested in designing and making, while others are more interested in fact finding and research. That's the beauty of the group dynamic.
Looking forward to next year already!
