Lung Capacity Experiment
For this experiment we used a small plastic tube, a plastic bottle and a basin.
We filled the basin with a little bit of water and then we filled the bottle with water almost to the top. When we turned the plastic bottle we covered it so the water would not leak out. We put it into the basin and inserted a plastic tube into the bottle.
We asked a few people in the class to take a deep breath and breathe into the tubing for as long as possible. As they did this the air replaced the air in the bottle, forcing the water out into the basin.
This is a method used to measure lung capacity. The amount of water displaced from the bottle corresponds to a person’s lung capacity. Some people had smaller lung capacities than others . We could see than some children only displaced a small amount of water whilst others displaced nearly all the water in the bottle.
