A group of 5th and 6th class pupils entered the ECO UNESCO Young Environmentalist Competition. They called themselves The Sliabh Beagh Protectors. They started project because of dumping in Sliabh Beagh. They aim of the project was to teach people about how beautiful and important the bog is. They hope that after learning this everyone will look after it.
The plan had three main actions. The first one was to teach the children in our school about aspects of Sliabh Beagh. We invited speakers into the school to teach us about the bog (Dr Rory Sheehan) animals and tourism (Paddy Sherry), birds (Joe Shannon) , history (Mrs Mc Kenna), and water treatment facilities (Seán Clerkin and Claire Sherlock). Everyone from third to sixth class has had a least one speaker, teach them about Sliabh Beagh.
The second action was to teach the wider community about Sliabh Beagh. They have produced a brochure “Enjoy Sliabh Beagh” based on our research and what we learned from the speakers.
The third action was to get everybody in our school out to Sliabh Beagh so that they could enjoy it. We organised that everyone would get one night off homework if they send a Sliabh Beagh selfie to the school’s email address.
In the third term we will organise a trip to Sliabh Beagh for every class!
